Essential tools required to measure a kitchen accurately

Stage 1: Draw the Layout and Photograph the Space

Start with a rough top-down sketch of the kitchen; it doesn't need to be neat, just accurate enough to capture the shape. Mark where doors, windows, corners, and any protruding beam or column sit. In our experience, almost every second apartment kitchen we visit in cities like Pune or Hyderabad has at least one beam or duct box that nobody mentioned until we were standing in the room.

Once that's done, photograph each wall, every corner, the ceiling, and any visible plumbing or wiring. These photos come in useful far more often than people expect; we've caught old pipe stubs and uneven beam edges in photos that were missed entirely in written notes.

Stage 2: Take the Overall Room Measurements

Measure each wall corner-to-corner at three separate heights: near the floor, around counter level, and near the ceiling. Walls in Indian homes, particularly in buildings over ten years old, rarely run perfectly straight, and a single measurement can hide a lean or bulge that only shows up once cabinets are being installed.

Treat each wall as its own measurement rather than assuming the room forms a perfect rectangle. Opposite walls differing by 10-30 mm is common even in newer construction.

Stage 3: Record the Floor-to-Ceiling Height

Take the ceiling height at two or three spots around the kitchen. This number decides how tall your wall cabinets and any loft unit above them can be. As a rough guide, a loft unit tends to work once ceiling height crosses about 2,700 mm; below that, it usually looks cramped rather than functional.

Where a soffit, beam, or false-ceiling drop exists, measure its height and how far it projects into the room separately. This shows up constantly in kitchens with ducted chimneys, and it places a hard limit on how high overhead cabinets can go.

Stage 4: Note Every Door, Window, and Opening

Log width, height, and sill height for each window, along with width, frame depth, and swing direction for each door. Include the trim and frame in these numbers; it's a small detail, but it's the difference between a cabinet section that closes flush and one that catches on the frame every time.

If a windowsill sits close to counter height (around 900 mm), a countertop extension across it is often possible. If it sits lower, plan the layout around it instead.

Stage 5: Locate Plumbing, Gas, and Electrical Points

This is the stage where Indian kitchens genuinely differ from the Western layouts most online guides are written around, and it's the one step worth double-checking. Track down and note the exact position of:

These fixed points effectively decide where the sink, hob, and chimney end up. Getting one wrong is, in our experience, the single most expensive mistake to fix once installation is already underway; a misplaced drain point alone can mean breaking tile to reroute plumbing.

Stage 6: Measure the Appliances

For any appliance you're keeping – fridge, microwave, oven, or dishwasher – record its width, height, and depth. Leave a margin for door-swing space and ventilation, particularly near the hob and chimney area. More than one layout has needed a last-minute redesign after a "standard-size" fridge turned out a few centimetres wider than the client remembered.

Stage 7: Check the Base Cabinet Wall Space

Measure the wall space earmarked for base units, working from one end to whatever obstruction comes next: a door, an appliance, or a corner. Flag any unevenness along the way, since it affects how neatly the base units line up.

Indian base cabinets are typically built with a 600 mm platform depth and a height of 850-900 mm, adjusted where possible to suit the primary cook's height — a platform built for someone 5'2" feels very different at 5'9".

Stage 8: Check the Upper Cabinet Zones

Where the wall cabinets sit depends on ceiling height, counter height, and backsplash choice. Measure from the floor up to where the underside of the wall cabinet should fall — usually 550-600 mm above the counter, leaving enough room to work without the cabinet feeling like it's looming overhead.

Bring the spirit level out again here. A wall that isn't quite straight can throw off the whole cabinet line, and it shows far more in a design built around clean, minimal lines.

Stage 9: Measure the Corners Carefully

Corners tend to decide whether a modular kitchen layout actually works or just looks fine on paper. Measure both walls meeting at each corner, and note how far cabinets can extend before running into a door swing or another obstacle. Precise corner numbers are what let a designer fit in a carousel unit or pull-out storage without leaving dead space behind it – something L-shape and U-shape kitchens, the most common layouts in Indian apartments, depend on heavily.

Stage 10: Go Over Everything Again and Finalise the Sketch

Walk through every figure a second time from wall lengths, ceiling height, appliance sizes, and clearances. Update the sketch with final numbers marked against each wall and fixture. This one step, more than any other, is what prevents the expensive rework that sometimes has to be fixed after cabinets have already gone into production elsewhere.
